Career Description

As a Transportation Engineer you will prepare preliminary engineering reports and plans for roadway construction. Must be a problem solver who enjoys working with a team and has excellent communication skills and attention to detail. Primary duties associated with this position are as follows: Prepare Engineering/Environmental Documents:Preliminary reports use engineering analysis to evaluate the required work for projects and environmentally clear projects:Gather preliminary information, for field reviews and prepare meeting minutes.Collect, review, and analyze data - create reports, conceptual figures and exhibits.Prepare or coordinate responses to concerns raised during project review process.Prepare solicitation of views letters and coordinate with interested outside entities.Identify and develop potential designs and alternates and recommend the most effective alternates.Coordinate public involvement in project development process.Develop and evaluate preliminary cost estimates for various alternatives.Write reports and distribute to FHWA and appropriate divisions and districts, address all comments.Maintain complete and up-to-date project files.Prepare Project Plans:Project plans lay out the details for the approved corrective actions to highway deficiencies. Plans are required to competitively bid projects and instruct contractors on what to build.Gather, organize and review all design information.Coordinate work with other DOT divisions.Develop design in accordance with department's policies and practices.Prepare plan sheets including typical sections, detail, and layout sheets.Prepare and evaluate horizontal and vertical alignments, create cross sections, and calculate earthwork.Develop construction traffic control plan with sequencing, signing, marking and devices needed.Determine right-of-way limits.Prepare cost estimates and estimate of quantities.Write plan notes on items for specific projects.Compile plan sheets from other divisions for plan reviews and prepare meeting minutes.Complete project on schedule.Project Development and Coordination:The designer is responsible for coordinating with others involved with the project. Many activities are dependent on other activities which require coordination for a timely completion. Tasks include:Create tasks needed to complete milestone activities.Schedule tasks to meet milestone activities.Coordinate work with other sections, divisions and districts.Schedule meetings. Prepare and distribute minutes.Prepare preliminary layouts, cost estimates and special investigations when required.Assist others with cost estimates, vertical alignments, preliminary cost estimates and other information.Assist other employees when their project is due within short time frame.Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Transportation Engineer II:Bachelor's degree in civil, transportation, or construction engineeringTwo years of professional-level engineering work experienceEligibility to write the Fundamentals of Engineering exam as specified by the Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.Requires a class D driver's license for travel to meetings and project locations.Transportation Engineer I:Bachelor's degree in civil, transportation, or construction engineeringEligibility to write the Fundamentals of Engineering exam as specified by the Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.Requires a class D driver's license for travel to meetings and project locations.Employment of the selected candidate will be contingent on satisfactorily completing the interview process and reference check.
