Returned/Dishonored Check

Should a check not clear an employer’s bank because of non-sufficient funds, stop payment, closed account or something other:

  • The check will be submitted a second time,
  • A notice will be sent to the employer and employee about the returned check,
  • Future payments must be by cash, money order, cashier’s check, certified check or EFT.

If the check is returned a second time,

  • Another notice will be sent to the employee and employer about the returned check,
  • The employer must work with the employee and Child Support to ensure the employee is made whole for the earnings that were withheld.

Reinstatement of check privileges will be considered if all of the following takes place:

  • The check cleared with the second deposit or payment was made to cover the dishonored check within 14 days of the notice of the dishonored check.
  • Payments are in full and on time for nine (9) months following the dishonored check.
  • A written request for reinstatement of check privileges is submitted to Child Support. The written request must include an explanation of steps taken to ensure future check will be honored. 
  • The request is reviewed and approved by Child Support.

If a second check is returned, check privileges will be revoked permanently.

Dishonored Electronic Funds Transfers (EFT)

Should an electronic payment not clear an employer’s bank because of non-sufficient funds, stop payment, closed account or something other:

  • A notice will be sent to the employer and employee about the dishonored transaction,
  • The employer must work with the employee and Child Support to ensure the employee is made whole for the earnings that were withheld,
  • Future payments must be by cash, money order, or cashier’s check.
  • Reinstatement of EFT privileges will be considered if:
    • The State Disbursement Unit received funds to cover the dishonored transaction within 14 days of the initial notice of the NSF.
    • Payments are received in full and on time for nine (9) months following the dishonored transaction.
    • A written request for reinstatement of EFT remittal privileges is submitted to the State Disbursement Unit. The written request must include an explanation of steps taken to ensure all future transactions will be honored.
    • The request is approved by Child Support.
    • If a second transaction is dishonored, EFT privileges will be revoked permanently.
