Parenting Time is the time each parent enjoys with his or her children.

Parenting time is usually specified in a court order. There are many different parenting time arrangements.

  • Primary Residential Responsibility - One parent has the children most or all of the time.  The other parent may have specific parenting times and usually owes child support to the parent with primary residential responsibility.
  • Equal Residential Responsibility (equal physical custody) - Both parents enjoy the same amount of time with their children.
  • Split Residential Responsibility (split custody) - Each parent has at least one of the children.

In Equal and Split residential responsibility arrangements, both parents owe support to one another. The amounts the parents owe to one another will be offset and the parent owing the greater amount must pay the difference through the State Disbursement Unit. The offset is stopped any month when support is assigned to the state due to certain public benefits being expended such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or foster care.

Child Support does not determine or enforce parenting time. Parenting time is the right of the children.
